About Me

I am research assistant and PhD student at the Cystems Security chair at the University of Duisburg-Essen and part of the collaborative research center SFB 1119 CROSSING. Before, I studied computer science at athe University of Paderborn and Duisburg-Essen, graduating with a masters degree. I fancy IT security and like to play with technology.

I live in Essen and have a ball pit in my living room. It's two by 1.5m so there is enough space to relax, watch movies, or hack on the computer.

For more than fiveteen years I have been around hackerspaces and the Chaos Computer Club. I am chairman of the local hackerspace in Essen, where I do administrative tasks, but also organize and give weekly talks on random topics, and work on my projects in the electronics lab and the woodworking workshop.

At the Moment

We're having Corona. Well, at least the others have, that's why I'm home all the time. Since March I'm doing home office. Sometimes I'm also working from my ballpit or my hammock in the garden (if the weather is nice).

Normally, I'd go to several conferences and hacker camps during the year, to meet friends, get to know new stuff and work on projects. Two years ago, we started the Chaos Post, a post office on hacker events, where you can send physical postcards that get delivered on the event, to future events, and to the outside world. As all events and conferences have been canceled, my plans got somewhat mixed up. I use the time to complete side-projects that have been stalled during the last years due to lack of time.

- Building cocktail robots to enhance my developer skills. Use 3d printer, solder some electronics and foremost update my web programming skills and build a modern web app with responsive web design and Python back-end and maybe an Android app.

- Give a short presentation on a random topic every week at my local hacker space. Due to the closing of the hackerspace I have started recording these talks. Talks have become longer and I built a toolchain with Big Blue Button and OBS to record talks.

- Start a co-housing project for nerds, dubbed 'Hackerdorf'. I plan to buy a large building and integrate several large, individual apartments as well as shared community areas.

Projects

Hackerdorf

I want to build a community housing projects for hackers. The main idea is to have nice neighbours and share infrastructure, e.g., garden, workshop, co-working space, garage, swimming pool, sauna. There are many things that are nice to have, but you do not need them on your own and they are expensive or a lot of work to maintain. These things can be shared with neighbours.

Chaospott/Petit Foo

I am an active member of the Chaos Computer Club and the local hackerspace Chaospott. I dedicated myself to organize weekly short presentations, that are held during our weekly meetings. Presentatations have varying length, typically between 15 and 60 minutes and random topics.

Christmas Cookies

Every year, we meet on a weekend and bake a large number of different christmas cookies, typically between 24 and 42 different kinds of cookies. Then, the cookies are packed and given away. Afterwards, feedback is collected using a survey to select the best recipes for the next year and ensure a large variety of different cookies. Also feedback on the baking and practicability of the recipe is obtained. This requires a lot of organization and planning. Currently, we are working to transform our collection of recipes together with the feedback into a cookbook.

Chaospost

The Chaos Post is a post office on hacker events like Chaos Communication Congress, Chaos Camp, and Easterhegg. There, you can send postcards withtin the event and to the outer world. Postcards are sorted and delivered by voluntary carriers. If the destination is outside the event, postcards are sent using the regular postal service. I focus on running the post office, and designing postcards and stamps.

Cocktail Robots

I love machines and automatons, blinking LEDs and fancy electronics. All of this is combined in cocktail robots. I am building cocktail robots using peristaltic pumps, Arduino and Raspberry Pi microcontrollers, and of course many colorful LEDs.
